What Is Infertility?
Infertility is not getting pregnant even though you're trying. When everything works properly, about 85 percent of couples become pregnant after trying for a year or less. If you've been trying longer, you might want to consider talking to a specialist.
However, if you're already 35 or older, you don't want to wait a year. As you get older, you start producing fewer eggs. And the eggs you do produce are of less quality. So they're right: the biological clock is ticking. If you're not pregnant after six months of trying at age 35 or older, you should see a specialist.
Keep in mind that a lot of things go into getting pregnant:
- Healthy sperm and eggs
- Open fallopian tubes
- The sperm’s ability to fertilize the egg
- The fertilized egg’s ability to attach itself to the uterus
If something goes wrong with one or more of those factors, you may not be able to get pregnant. Fortunately, there are many things our doctors can do to help.
